IPL 2018 | MATCH 23 | MI vs SRH | FANFIGHT PREVIEW

MI vs SRH: The last time Mumbai Indians lost their first three IPL games, they went on to win the league. However, this year the 3-time champions have had a bizarre run. They’ve lost 4 games out of 5 but, strangely enough, have a positive net run-rate. The men in blue are currently placed 7th as they take on SRH in the 23rd game of the Indian Premier League. SRH started off fluently but a hiccup seems to have distorted their path. They’re now placed 4th on the league table. A win here will move them up one place or two based on the margin of victory. Can Mumbai do the unthinkable yet again or will Hyderabad pounce on Mumbai’s finishing frailties? Here’s our overview of MI vs SRH.

The last fixture between these two teams at the Wankhede saw the home team beat the travellers by 4 wickets. In the reverse fixture this year, Billy Stanlake’s boundary off the penultimate delivery helped the Sunrisers clinch a crucial two points.

VENUE: WANKHEDE STADIUM, MUMBAI

PITCH CONDITIONS

The pitch here, like many other pitches in India, is batting friendly. The average score on this ground after 3 completed games this year is 182. Teams have taken a liking to chasing down targets but as the tournament proceeds, batting first will fetch better results. The pitch seems to deteriorate rather quickly making stroke-making difficult from ball one. Innings construction holds key on this wicket.

TEAM NEWS

Bhuvaneshwar Kumar is expected to sit this game out. This conjecture because he hasn’t travelled to Mumbai with the team. Sandeep Sharma is likely to replace him

Shikhar Dhawan had a hit in the nets and is believed to return for this crucial fixture. If he isn’t declared match fit, Ricky Bhui will open the innings for SRH

Mumbai are likely to remain unchanged.

PLAYERS TO WATCH OUT FOR

Surya Kumar Yadav has been MI’s mainstay so far. The enigma behind skipper Sharma’s batting order was put to bed when Yadav okayed to open the innings for Mumbai. He’s hit two half-centuries facing the new ball. Both beautifully manufactured innings. Yadav has added flair to his already audacious batting prowess. He’s batting with a lot of finesse; especially the drives straight down the ground. Yadav’s come of age and for Mumbai to flourish he needs to score consistently. The good news; he already is.

IPL 2018 – Matches: 5, Runs: 196, Average: 39.20, Strike-rate: 140.00

Krunal Pandya was retained by the Mumbai Indians via the RTM card for Rs. 8.8 crores. We’ve seen glimpses of what he’s capable of, but MI needs more refined performances. At the Wankhede, Pandya has scored 207 runs at a smashing strike-rate of 146.8. Krunal has the best economy rate(6.30 runs/over) among the current Mumbai Indians bowlers at this venue, 10 overs being the minimum criteria.

IPL –  Matches: 30, Runs: 569, Strike-rate: 156.74(4th highest in IPL cricket), Balls/Boundaries: 4.5

Billy Stanlake can bowl exceptionally fast. The lanky Aussie has been a positive find for both SRH and Australia. Stanlake will spearhead the young but talented SRH fast bowling trio with Bhuvaneshwar Kumar declared unfit for this fixture. In the Big Bash League 2017/18 Stanlake picked 11 wickets in 10 games. While the numbers aren’t as intriguing, the manner in which he operated earned him a place in the orange army. Watch out for this pacer. SRH undoubtedly have the best bowling unit in the IPL and Stanlake there is a massive contributor.

DID YOU KNOW?

Yusuf Pathan is only one run away from reaching 3,000 runs in the IPL. Pathan will become the 13th player to reach the elusive figure.

Against Mumbai Bhuvaneshwar Kumar has picked 16 wickets in 12 games. His economy rate versus the 3-time champions, a staggering 5.64.

The IPL has seen 14 hat-tricks over the last 10 years and Rohit Sharma is the only MI player to feature in it. Ironically he achieved this feat for Deccan Chargers against Mumbai Indians.

WHO WILL WIN MI vs SRH?

SRH have got the better of MI in 4 out of their last 5 bouts. Nonetheless, injuries woes have plagued SRH at this peak juncture. Bhuvaneshwar Kumar, MI’s primary nemesis won’t feature in this fixture while Dhawan’s fitness is a bit of a concern. Also, Mumbai Indians are now cornered. They’ve got no other option but to win. Fortunately for MI, beating teams late in the competition has been their fortae and for the 23rd IPL fixture between MI and SRH, MI are the favourites.
